Semantic Context Design Method

  1. 1

    Business capability

Start from what the organisation needs to be able to do.

  2. 2

    Bounded context

Delimit the domain in which terms have one meaning.

  3. 3

    Business ontology

Model the concepts and relations of that domain.

  4. 4

    Source mappings

Map source data and documents onto the ontology.

  5. 5

    Context contract

Declare which context is valid, permitted and evidenced for a task.

  6. 6

    Agent interface

Expose the contracted context to agents.

  7. 7

    Evaluation

Test that agents receive and honour the contracted context.

Built on four established approaches

Domain-Driven Design

Bounded contexts, ubiquitous language, domain ownership.

Ontology Engineering

E.g. Ontology Development 101 and NeOn: concept modelling, competency questions, semantic validation.

Data Contracts & Data Products

Explicit interfaces, ownership, versioning, quality agreements.

Contract-Driven Development

Schema-first APIs, conformance tests, backwards compatibility.
