On 16 July 2026 Gartner published the Magic Quadrant for Customer Service Knowledge Management Systems. It is the first Magic Quadrant in knowledge management; until now, Gartner covered this market with a Market Guide.

Eight vendors were evaluated. The Leaders are eGain, Salesforce and Shelf. Shelf is noted for an ontology-driven design that models business entities and their relationships, so a knowledge request can be interpreted in context.

The scope is deliberately narrow: knowledge management for customer service only.

Our interpretation: an ontology-driven Leader suggests that machine-readable meaning is becoming a buying criterion. The narrow scope also leaves open how context travels across domains and platforms — the question the Context Contract works on.

Sources: the Gartner research abstract (gartner.com/en/documents/8131229) and the CX Today summary of 5 August 2026. The Open Context Guild has no relationship with Gartner or the vendors named.
